In academic texts, it is about communicating thoughts, ideas and findings in a clear andunderstandable way and justifying them with logical arguments and evidence.
There are many types of professional texts (e.g. theses, technical papers, conferencepapers, seminar papers, research reports, presentations) and each has its own specificfeatures that need to be understood and adapted to when writing and the appropriate style ofprofessional language needs to be chosen accordingly.
In general, the content of the paper needs to be adapted to:
- Readers: Who will be the reader of the paper? What is his/her knowledge?
- The purpose: What do you want to convey? Why are you writing the paper? (e.g., getting anacademic degree, publishing an article in a professional journal)?
The actual production of a professional text has several stages and involves not only theactual writing of the text, but also the observance of certain conventions (differentrequirements for writing a thesis, different requirements for an article in a professionaljournal, etc.) and formal requirements.
Scientific work requires monitoring developments in the field, i.e. also the work of otherscientific teams on which the subject is being built and further developed. In the course ofwriting academic texts, it is therefore always necessary to cite the sources on which theauthor has drawn.
It is very important to be aware of the legal framework for the use offoreign copyrighted works (in the Czech Republic it is Act No. 121/200 Coll. - Copyright Act) and the ethical principles of academic writing and to avoid plagiarism. For this reason, it isimportant to know how to cite correctly.
Examples of citing different types of documents according to ISO 690.
At the CTU, the principles of ethical work with information are set out in the MethodologicalGuideline on the Observance of Ethical Principles in the Preparation of Theses and in theCode of Ethics of the CTU in Prague.
